University teachers demand funds for HEC

LAHORE, July 4: The Federation of All Pakistan Universities Academic Staff Associations (FAPUASA), Punjab chapter, staged a rally on Tuesday for the release of Rs4 billion as a last installment to the Higher Education Commission (HEC) for onward distribution to universities in the country.

Punjab FAPUASA President Prof Dr Suhail Aftab Qureshi said the federal government should also release Rs6 billion as part of the first quarter installment to universities as announced in the budget for the year 2012-13.

He said the HEC should relax criteria made for appointments of teachers in public universities.

Protesters demanded the Shaheed Benazir Bhutto University (SBBU) vice chancellor be removed. They demanded reinstatement of all teachers, who were illegally terminated by the SBBU vice chancellor.

They also demanded removal of Vice-Chancellor Nazir Mughal of the University of Sindh, Jamshoro.

Prof Qureshi announced that the federation would hold protest demonstrations in Hyderabad, Peshawar, Islamabad, Balochistan and Kashmir on July 4, 5, 9 and 10.

“If the peaceful protests do not bear fruitful results, the FAPUASA will plan a future course of action,” he added.

date extended: The Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (BISE) has extended date for online registration of regular students of Class-IX for the session 2012-14 from July 3 to July 5, due to a bank holiday on July 2.

The board has directed all public and private sector schools to submit online registration returns of their students within due date.Dawn.
