Lahore: 30 May: JZT, Jehaad for Zero Thalassemia, observed "Thalassemia Day" on May 8, 2012. A blood donation camp to facilitate Thalassemia major patients was also organized a day before. On 8th May, about 8 universities joined JZT-UCP to get the awards for organizing blood camps in their respective universities under the title "Heroes of Humanity Contest".
COMSATS university won the contest by collecting 230 bags of blood, while Rachna College Engineering and Technology bagged the runner up position by collecting 108 bags. University of the Punjab was awarded consolation prize (106 bags). University of Central Punjab itself contributed 152 bags being the host of the contest. World Health Organization (WHO) awarded special prizes to all the participants and position holders. Other universities who joined hands with JZT included: King Edward Medical University, IBA Punjab University, and Sharif College of Engineering & Technology.
The event was attended by a huge number of students. Important dignitaries included Dr. Irfan Ahmed, Surveillance Officer, WHO, Mr. Majeed Sharif, Senior Officer, Punjab IT board, Mr. Yasir Qureshi, Actor/Director PTV, Mr. Tahir Hafeez, Director PTV, and Mr. Rehan Butt, Ex Captain, Pakistan Hockey team. Dr. ZafarUllah, Pro Rector UCP, Dr. Jamshed, Dean Faculty of Pharmacy, Dr. Tabrez Shami, Dean FOE and many teachers and professors from UCP also attended the event.
"Challenge of the Challenged" show brought stunning performances by thalassemics on stage. JZT FunCART also performed amusing skits and plays to make the day memorable.
Later, a walk from UCP to Shaukat Khanum U-turn was held under police supervision. "Candles of Hope" were then lit to show solidarity and care for thalassemics.
