LAHORE:March 23:THE Punjab Teachers Union (PTU) set up a hunger strike camp in front of the Punjab Assembly on Thursday to highlight problems being faced by schoolteachers across the province.
Dozens of schoolteachers were present at the camp and were carrying banners and placards inscribed with slogans against the Punjab government. They demanded substantial increase in salaries, saying skyrocketing inflation was making their lives miserable.
The teachers also demanded rapid in-service promotion, abolition of ban on casual leave as well as implementation on teachers’ package. They said in some districts the authorities had failed to implement teachers’ package announced in 2009 and 2011. The PTU office-bearers, including Sajjad Kazmi, Rana Liaqat, Malik Saeed and others, said the government should ensure at least six teachers in a primary school besides they demanded creation of new post of head teacher.
They also demanded implementation of 4-tier formula of promotion on schoolteachers like college teachers. They further demanded the government not assign non-academic duties/assignments to schoolteachers in future.The news.
