Peshawar: 12 Dec: Peshawar University (Upesh) has announced that The life of an ordinary Afghan has not improved at all after a decade of pledges and support made by the world community at various conferences. This is because the US is not interested in building a strong infrastructure for the Afghans which would enable them to strengthen their own manufacture base and governance in the future. The Bonn conference was an ordinary effort to address the long-term issues of Afghan people with no clear guideline as the endgame approaches. This was stated by Vice Chancellor University of Peshawar Prof. Dr. Azmat Hayat Khan while giving lecture on NATO attacks on salala check post and its aftermath/ latest situation in and around Afghanistan. He said that the attack done at mid night on an identified check post was pretty much deliberate because NATO forces have good idea about the locations of our posts along the border. This was a strategic move by the allied forces to pressurize Pakistan, which some argue was designed to provide safe passage to Militants into Pakistan for terrorists attacks.
Afghan President Hamid Karzai is considered as an ineffective Mayer of Kabul as this is the only area in which his government has any writ. He is not the true representative of the People of Afghanistan because he neither has a political party nor heads any tribal group or their backing. The internal divide in Afghanistan is much on ethnicity than reglion and all the major stakeholders and their representatives including Pashtuns, Northern Alliance, Taliban and Gulbadin, the educated seculars, tribal chiefs and more importantly the People Democratic Party of Afghanistan must be taken on board for a long-term peace solution to the Afghan conflict, he argued.
Prof. Dr. Azmat Hayat said that land route through Karachi is the shortest and cheapest transport route for NATO supplies and the decision by the government to stop NATO supplies was commendable as a reaction to their attacks but the biggest challenge confronting the government is for how long? The alternate route supply through Russia is very long and it takes more than fifteen days to reach Afghanistan. It is not feasible to them because time is the biggest factor in supplies of arms, ammunition and other goods to army at times of war and operations, he added.
Dr. Hayat termed US approach towards Pakistan as tactical than strategic, adding that on the other hand US wants to keep strategic ties with India in future role in Afghanistan. US long-term objective in Afghanistan in not to fight Al Qaeda and Taliban only but it is directed more towards containment of China, Iran, Russia and access to Central Asia, he maintained. The withdrawal from Afghanistan speech by President Obama had a very demoralizing impact on NATO forces and the Afghan forces that is why after so many efforts being done most of the NATO forces don’t see a reason to be in Afghanistan while the strength of Afghan forces could not be increased from a mere 20,000 , he added.
US wants to use Pakistan as a springboard to Afghanistan and Afghanistan to Central Asia and its resources which many believes is important for it to remain a super power but at the same time Pakistan must be mindful of it and make drastic changes and review its Pak-US relations, he concluded.
