Lahore: 10 Feb: Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) Lahore has announced that Pakistan currently faces significant challenges – the strive for establishing the rule of law standing out as the quintessential one. At this important juncture, LUMS strives to provide an avenue for invoking uninhibited thought, dialogue and debate – the kind of discourse which gives rise to visionary leadership, which in turn shall give rise to a nation that is stronger, progressive and democratic.
It was with these ideals deeply embedded in our hearts and minds that we successfully conducted the first ever LUMS All Pakistan Moot Court Competition in November 2009, then a Second Moot Court Competition in 2011 and now the Third National Moot Court Competition in 2012.
Aspiring to build upon last year’s success, the Department of Law and Policy at LUMS selected a pressing issue for this year’s Moot Court Competition and the topic this year was the legality of attacks on a country’s soil and sovereignty. The world is moving towards globalisation and in such times it is important we reflect upon what international law and international humanitarian law asks of us. The recent events have attracted many debates and discussions all over Pakistan. LUMS being one of the leading institutes of Pakistan, decided to address the issue by way of a Moot Court Competition.
LUMS Department of Law and Policy hosted the Third National Moot Court Competition on February 04, 2012. Teams from all over Pakistan, namely University Law College Quetta, Gilani Law College BZU Multan, SZABIST Karachi, International Islamic University Islamabad, University Law College Gujrat, Punjab Law College Lahore, and Pakistan College of Law, Lahore, participated in this year’s event which saw a remarkable display of legal prowess and academic research skills. The team from Pakistan College of Law was the winner and SZABIST, Karachi were the runner-up. Muhammad Dawood Jan from University Law College, Quetta received the Best Oralist award and Zeeshan Zafar Hashmi from Pakistan College of Law received the Best Speaker award. It was also interesting to see how different law students approached the issue at hand from a multitude of viewpoints.
Furthermore, we were honoured by the presence of Justice Sair Ali, Justice Aamer Raza Khan and Justice Asad Munir, esteemed justices both from the Supreme Court and the High Court who adjudicated the proceedings in an avant-garde fashion. The Chief Guest for the event was Dr. Parvez Hassan.
The event was a great success. Judges, lawyers, members of the legal fraternity, faculty, and students from all over Pakistan attended the event. Amongst the attendees were: Honourable Mr. Justice Mian Shakirullah Jan (Judge, Supreme Court of Pakistan), Honourable Mr. Justice Muhammad Ather Saeed (Judge, Supreme Court of Pakistan), Honourable Mr. Justice Ijaz ul Ahsan (Judge, Lahore High Court), Honourable Mr. Justice Muhammad Farrukh Irfan Khan (Judge, Lahore High Court), and Justice (Retd.) Fazal Karim.
