Lahore: 19 Sep: Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) Lahore has announced that The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, LUMS collaborated with Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and Henry L. Stimson Centre to organise a workshop on “Deterrence Stability” on Friday, September 14, 2012 and a conference on “Pakistan’s Security after 2014” on September 15-16 in Islamabad. The HSS Department has been working with these two Washington based institutions for the past three years in bringing together researchers, scholars, policymakers and civil society activists from different regions of Pakistan to discuss and debate issues that may affect security of Pakistan and that of the wider South Asian region.The workshop on “Deterrence Stability” focused on the pertinent issues of operationalising deterrence, unauthorization of conflict, achieving deterrence stability, and responsibilities of nuclear powers. About 40 young scholars and resarchers from a wide range of think tanks, universities and research institutions from Islamabad attended the workshop. George Perkovich (Carnegie Endowment for International Peace) and Rasul Bakhsh Rais (Professor HSS, LUMS) introduced the workshop and moderated the discussion.
The conference on “Pakistan’s Security After 2014” covered seven themes over one and half days (September 15-16). These themes included Pakistan’s security environment, violent extremism, sovereignty, nuclear weapons, water and energy, US-Pakistan relations and defining a positive agenda. Twenty- five participants from different cities including Quetta, Karachi, Lahore, Sargodha and Islamabad attended the conference. Ambassador Shaharyar Khan, George Perkovich, Michael Krepon, Syed Rifaat Hussain, Feroz Khan, Salma Malik and Rasul Bakhsh Rais presided and conducted the sessions.
