Lahore: 09 Feb: Vice Chancellor LUMS, Dr. Adil Najam has been elected to the WWF International Board of Trustees for a period of three years. He takes over from Tim Flannery, whose tenure ended in December 2011.
One of the largest conservation organisations in the world, WWF was established in 1961. The central secretariat for the organisation called WWF International is located in Gland, Switzerland and has offices in more than 80 countries around the world. Since its inception 50 years ago, WWF has invested almost US$10 billion in more than 13,000 projects worldwide.
Dr. Najam was appointed Vice Chancellor of LUMS in June 2011. He is an expert on environmental policy, global governance and international development. Before joining LUMS, he served as the Frederick S. Pardee Professor of Global Public Policy at Boston University and the Director of the Pardee Centre for the Study of the Longer-Range Future.
An alum of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), he possesses two Masters and a PhD from the institute. He also has a Specialisation in Negotiation from the Programme on Negotiation at the Harvard Law School, and an engineering degree from the University of Engineering and Technology (UET), Pakistan.
With Dr. Najam as Lead Author for the Third and Fourth Assessments of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the Fourth Assessment of the IPCC was awarded the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize for advancing the public understanding of climate change science.
Dr. Najam has been on the advisory boards of international organisations and nongovernmental organisations and provided counsel to governments in the developing and industrialised countries on issues related to environment and development, globalisation, development policy, and higher education. Dr. Najam’s research and teaching interests include a wide range of topics related to sustainable development policy for developing countries, especially focusing on climate change, international trade, global governance and human security.
