Media can educate citizens on causes of disasters’

Lahore:11May:Two-day long refresher training workshop for media coordinators of Punjab Emergency Service/Rescue 1122 concluded at the Managers Training Centre, Emergency Services Academy, on Saturday. The basic purpose of the workshop was to train the audio/video cameramen of the service about incident reporting, effective monitoring of emergency staff, visual monitoring of operations, event management and coordination with media professionals on emergency operations sites. Jam Sajjad Hussain, head of public relations, was the course coordinator. Dr Farhan Khalid, registrar of the academy, Ali Hassan, head of law and administration, Mohsin Durrani, emergency officer coordination, Imran Ali, art section in charge and others were also present on the occasion. Punjab Rescue DG Dr Rizwan Naseer, while addressing the concluding ceremony, said that the media coordinators were the eyes and ears of the Service by playing their role of effective monitoring of emergency operations. Addressing them, he said, “You have to play the role of connecting bridge among public, media and the Service while engaging all stakeholders of society for prevention of emergencies.” He said the media was an important pillar of state and it could play an effective role in prevention of emergencies through education of the citizens about the causes leading to emergencies and disasters. He said monitoring was essential element to ensure working of emergency staff in a professional manner during management of trauma patients, medical emergencies, fire emergencies, building collapse and hazardous material incidents, etc. He said stressed the need to ensure uniform standards of emergency services being provided in all districts of the Punjab. According to him, reporting and visuals of emergency operations depict several hidden aspects of operations. Dr Rizwan Naseer said that visual monitoring feedback of emergency operations might further motivate rescuers to improve their performance through professional firefighting and emergency management.
