Lahore:July 18:A consultative meeting on “Feedlot business in Pakistan: opportunities and challenges” was held at the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) here on Sunday.
According to a press release, UVAS Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Talat Naseer Pasha chaired the inaugural session of the meeting while Secretary Livestock and Dairy Development Punjab Nasim Sadiq presided over the concluding session. Punjab Agriculture and Meat Company Chairman Mumtaz Khan Manhais, representatives from public and private sector from across country, academicians and researchers attended.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof Pasha said the aim of the consultative meeting was to provide a platform to all the stakeholders, including feedlot farmers, meat exporters, service providers, donor agencies and public sector representatives for networking where they could find opportunities keeping in view the current value chain, issues as well as they come up with their innovative ideas.
Nasim Sadiq assured the meeting participants of taking up their recommendations with the government and said the development of livestock sector was priority of the government. He also said we needed to develop our dairy sector adding without dairy development our small farmers would not prosper in Punjab.
Mumtaz Khan Manhais said we had to meet international standards if we really wanted to develop our meat industry and export red meat on a large scale. Earlier, Dr Muhammad Hayat Jaspal gave a presentation on animal handling, stress-free transportation, grading and standardisation and food safety of the quality meat.
