LAHORE : (Thursday, May 06, 2010): The PU Punjabi department organized the world Punjabi Musahira in Sheerani Hall of the Oriental College here today under the chairmanship of PU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran. Registrar Porf Dr Muhammad Naeem Khan, Faculty members and a large number of students participated in the Mushaira which commenced at 9 pm and closed at 2 am in the morning. Reputed poets who recited their poems included Anwar Masood, Dr Inam-ul-Haq Javed, Saleem Kashir, Saleem Tahir, Dr Younis Ahqar, Shafiq Saleemi, Waliat Ahmad Farooqi, Imran Naqvi, Ali Asghar Abbas, Bushra Ejaz, Anjum Qureshi, Majeed Khawar (Mailsi), Zahid Nawaz (Jhang), Maqbool Gillani (Multan), Dr Adil Soomro (Sindh), Dr Aman Ullah (USA), Dr Tufail Khalish (Germany). Recitation of fascinating and elegant verses repeatedly made audience break into spontaneous and thunderous applause. Dr Naheed Shahid acted as stage secretary during the Mushaira.
On conclusion of the poetic session, Vice-Chancellor Dr Kamran observed that nations which keep their literature and culture alive, always inherit great civilizations. Civilized societies greatly honor the producers of scholarly literary and poetic works. In the past, Mushairas were considered to be highly effective means of grooming the younger generation. However, despite accelerated scientific and material progress in the present- day world, their significance has not diminished, he added. Through participation in Mushairas, the young students can get acquainted with emerging creative and poetic trends which help them polish their latent creative capabilities. Dr Kamran also announced that soonafter the forthcoming summer vacations, an entire day would be devoted to the promotion and understanding of poetic works of great sufi reformers besides musical rendition of their spiritual poetry by renowned singers.
Earlier, presenting the welcome address, Prof Dr Ismatullah Zahid observed that the academic journey of Punjabi Department, spread over 40 years, had been creatively highly bright and productive during which valuable literary contributions were made towards rapid promotion of Punjabi language. The Department has been successfully holding the World Punjabi Mushaira for the last consecutive nine years. Paying glowing tributes to Dr Kamran on provision of liberal funds, he said the papers and poetry presented at the Conference and Mushaira would be soon published in a book form. Later the Principal Oriental College Prof Dr Mazhar Moeen offered his sincere thanks to the participating poets, students, community and lovers of Punjabi poetry.
