Report sought from Punjab govt in VCs case

LAHORE:July 18: The Lahore High Court on Monday sought a report from the Punjab government on a petition seeking a stay order against appointment of vice-chancellors at three public sector universities. Dr Abdul Mannan filed the petition pleading that the government initiated the process for the appointment of VCs at Punjab University, King Edward Medical University and Fatima Jinnah Medical College University.

Online admissions begin at PUCIT

LAHORE:16 July:The Punjab University has officially inaugurated online admissions at Punjab University College of Information Technology (PUCIT). Punjab University Vice Chancellor Dr Zafar Mueen Nasir inaugurated PUCIT’s indigenous single sign on admission system. On the first day of online registration, more than 1,500 applicants signed up and printed their challan forms to submit the fee. This year, PUCIT expects to receive a record number of applicants due to this hassle-free, automated, and online process at their doorstep.

CPEC will bring prosperity in region: PU VC

LAHORE :14 July:Punjab University Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Zafar Mueen Nasir has said that China-Pakistan Economic Corridor will bring prosperity in the region as China and Pakistan are partners in development. He was addressing the certificate distribution ceremony among Chinese language students of PU Confucius Centre at Al Raazi Hall here on Thursday. Directors of PU Confucius Centre Prof Liu Chensheng and Dr Rana Ejaz Ahmed, Dean Faculty of Oriental Learning Prof Dr Saleem Mazhar, Director External Linkages Dr Fauzia Hadi Ali and a large number of students were present on the occasion.

Teachers should be consulted on VCs criteria’

LAHORE:08 July: Federation of All Pakistan Academic Staff Association (FAPUASA), Punjab chapter, has demanded the provincial government that criteria for appointment of vice-chancellors (VCs) should be finalised after consulting all stakeholders, including the FAPUASA and specially its Punjab chapter. An emergency meeting of FAPUASA, Punjab chapter, was held at Punjab University here on Friday to discuss and deliberate over one-point agenda regarding formulation of criteria for the appointment of the VCs in the public sector universities of Punjab.

5-year LLB programme not workable, court told

LAHORE:01 July:A commission on legal education and law colleges on Friday informed the Lahore High Court that 5-year degree programme of Bachelor in Legislative Law (LLB) was a poor programme and dangerous for the future of coming generations. The commission headed by Anwar Kamal submitted 18-page report before a three-member full bench of the Lahore High Court. The commission in its report claimed that five-year LLB programme seemed result of non-cooperation of various educational institutions and public administrative departments.

PU Syndicate holds ‘illegal’ meeting, approves Rs 9bn budget

LAHORE:June 9: The Punjab University on Thursday held its syndicate meeting despite the stay order by the Lahore High Court (LHC). Teachers held a protest outside the vice chancellor's office and tried to stop the meeting. The meeting of syndicate approved budget for fiscal year 2017-18 of Rs 9 billion however, a number of teachers including elected members of PU Senate and PU Academic Staff Association (PUASA) stormed into the syndicate meeting and staged a protest demonstration outside the vice chancellor's office terming the meeting illegal.

LAHORE:June 9: Punjab University syndicate meeting chaired by interim Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Zaffar Mueen Nasir approved Rs 9 billion budget for the year 2017-18, amid strong protest from some members of the varsity senate, elected members of the Academic Staff Association (ASA) and faculty members. Those who protested were of the view that the interim VC was supposed to get approval to hold the syndicate meeting from the chancellor, which they claimed he didn’t, owing to which the same was allegedly illegal.

Punjab University to set up medical college

Lahore:05 June:They said that for the first time, police was deployed at the university for more than one month because of the VC’s failure to handle the situation. They also accused the VC of supporting Islami Jamiat Talaba (IJT), because of which its activities of vandalism had increased on campus, they claimed while adding that teachers and students felt fearful on campus.

PU teachers divided over VC’s appointment

LAHORE:05 June:Punjab University’s academics are divided over the appointment of a new vice-chancellor at the university, which is expected to be announced by the Punjab chief minister in the upcoming weeks. One group of teachers is demanding that former vice chancellor Dr Mujahid Kamran should be reappointed, while another is demanding that Acting Vice-Chancellor Dr Zafar Mueen Nasir be made the permanent VC.

Punjab university a writ filed in the LHC,

Lahore:May 29:For PU, a writ had been filed in the LHC, which stated that the incumbent VC did not fulfil the minimum criteria set by the PHEC. Another alleged financial misappropriation had been unearthed at PU in the incumbent’s tenure. For the former VC, Mujahid Kamran, a NAB inquiry is also looking into financial embezzlement during his nine-year tenure. For the LCWU, the contest is between acting VC Dr Rukhsana Kausar, Dr Uzma Qureshi and Dr Shahida Hasnain.
